China Lifts Customs Duties on Imports from the DRC
December 25, 2023
In a bold initiative aimed at strengthening ties between the People's Republic of China and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Chinese State Council recently announced the removal of tariffs on imports from six African countries, including the DRC. This historic decision, which took effect on December 25, 2023, opens up new prospects for economic cooperation between these two nations.
The Removal of Customs Duties: A Step Towards Enhanced Cooperation
The African countries benefiting from this groundbreaking measure include the DRC, Angola, Gambia, Mali, Madagascar, and Mauritania. This decision directly impacts 98% of taxable products, including coffee, palm oil, cotton, cocoa, fruits, seafood, and spices. Until now, these products were subject to customs duties upon arrival in China.
This tariff exemption policy, according to the Xinhua News Agency, embodies the spirit of Sino-African friendship and cooperation, marking a significant step towards creating a high-quality Sino-African community with a shared future. This measure is not limited to merely facilitating trade but is part of a long-term vision to extend this exemption to all the least developed African countries with which China maintains diplomatic relations.
A Successful Economic Collaboration
In the first ten months of 2023, trade between China and the African continent reached nearly 218 billion euros, with approximately 85 billion euros coming from imports of African products. This lifting of tariffs undoubtedly strengthens these figures, offering new opportunities for Congolese and Chinese companies.
This initiative is in line with the commitments made by Congolese President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi and Chinese President Xi Jinping to strengthen bilateral relations. The montage created by the Chinese embassy in the DRC, featuring these two leaders, symbolizes the importance of this economic and political collaboration
A Shared Vision: Creating a Sino-African Community
The decision to lift tariffs goes beyond immediate economic interests. It reflects a shared vision between China and the beneficiary African countries, that of building a community of destiny based on friendship and cooperation. This approach will promote economic growth, encourage investments, and strengthen cultural exchanges between China and the DRC.
In conclusion, the removal of customs duties on imports from the DRC marks a significant step in deepening Sino-Congolese relations. This initiative by China opens new opportunities for trade and cooperation between the two nations. Indeed, the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in China has already initiated the necessary steps with the Animal and Plant Inspection Department of the General Administration of the People's Republic of China. This approach aims to expedite the authorization for access of our country's agricultural products to the vast Chinese market. Nevertheless, it is essential to emphasize that these products must first comply with the phytosanitary regulations of Chinese customs.
