History of Relations between the DRC and Chad

Diplomatic relations between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Chad began in 1969. The two countries opened their respective embassies in April 1969 for the DRC and in June 1961 for Chad. These relations developed within the DRC-Chad joint commission, whose first regular session was held in Ndjamena from November 3 to 6, 1987. [1]

Facilitator of the Transition Process in Chad

The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, was honored for his pivotal role in the political transition process in Chad. In October 2022, his peers from the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) appointed him as Facilitator of this process. Beyond its traditional missions of cooperation and regional integration, ECCAS promotes peace and stability in Central Africa, supporting electoral processes in its member states.[2]

Meeting with Minister Didier Mazenga

On Monday, June 10, at the African Union City, President Tshisekedi granted an audience to Didier Mazenga, Minister of Regional Cooperation, who was acting as a special envoy to Chad. Special envoy Mazenga presented an interim report on the transition in Chad, highlighting the progress made and Tshisekedi's crucial role in the stabilization and democratization of the country. This transition process led to the electoral victory of President Idriss Deby Itno.[3]

Preparations for the Visit to N'Djamena

The meeting also addressed the preparation for Tshisekedi's visit to N'Djamena. The visit is intended to strengthen bilateral relations and allow Tshisekedi to receive the honors due to him. A Chadian team, led by the president of Chad's National Election Agency, will arrive in Kinshasa this Saturday to continue discussions and collaborations.[4]

Recognition and Distinctions

Didier Mazenga highlighted the importance of this recognition, stating that President Tshisekedi is seen as a "royal and emblematic figure in Chad," and it is in this context that he will be decorated and a street will be named after him," he added, and shed light on the honors that will be bestowed upon the Congolese President in recognition of his efforts.

This distinction reflects the respect and admiration he has earned through his commitment to peace and democracy in Central Africa.[5]
