Air Congo makes its first flight under the eyes of the Head of State: A new breath for Congolese aviation and economic development
17 December 2024

In a context where the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) aims to strengthen its infrastructure and boost its economy, the launch of the new national airline, Air Congo, represents a crucial step. This ambitious project, the result of a joint venture between the Congolese government and Ethiopian Airlines, aims to improve air connectivity in the country while promoting economic development. The inaugural flight, which took place in the presence of President Félix Tshisekedi, marks the beginning of a promising era for air transport in the DRC.
A historic launch of Air Congo: airline partner of Ethiopian Airlines
On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at N’djili International Airport, President Félix Tshisekedi officially launched the inaugural flight of Air Congo. This new airline, owned 51% by the DRC and 49% by Ethiopian Airlines, has two Boeing 737-800s to serve several Congolese cities such as Lubumbashi, Goma, Kisangani, Kolwezi, Kalemie, and Mbujimayi. This strategic partnership is designed not only to improve national air transport but also to strengthen the local economy.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Jean-Pierre Bemba, emphasized during the ceremony that: "Air Congo will strengthen its fleet with four (4) more Boeing 737-800s in less than a year and two more aircraft of this size in the next two years. A new era for air transport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a historic moment that symbolizes our desire to move forward, improve our infrastructure, enhance our competitiveness, and create sustainable jobs for our people. He expressed the wish to make Air Congo a symbol of reliability, safety, and modernity for the DRC. [1]
Air Congo: Advantages of the said joint venture
The leaders of Air Congo highlight several advantages related to this joint venture. Firstly, the creation of a national airline will allow for the organization of regular, secure, and punctual domestic flights. This is essential for improving the mobility of Congolese people and facilitating commercial exchanges between the different provinces of the country. Additionally, this initiative will contribute to the training of flight personnel and the implementation of best practices in the management of airline operations.
Furthermore, Air Congo plans to improve existing airport facilities and organize inter-provincial cargo flights. These developments are crucial for boosting the local economy by facilitating trade and creating jobs in the aviation sector. The general manager of the new company also emphasized that the success of the project will depend on operational independence and the support of the Congolese government regarding traffic rights. The Commitment of Ethiopian Airlines: The CEO Speaks Out
Delegated by the Ethiopian government for this significant event, the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines expressed his commitment to this collaboration. He reassured the Head of State that his company is fully invested in this partnership. He cited examples of similar successes with other African countries such as Togo and Malawi, where collaborations have led to significant advancements in the aviation industry.
Ethiopian Airlines will not only bring its expertise in air management but also essential technical support. This includes training Congolese pilots as well as ground staff, which will enhance local capabilities while ensuring high standards of safety and service. [3]
A breathtaking vision for the economic future of the DRC
The launch of Air Congo is part of a broader vision by the Congolese government to revitalize the country's civil aviation. Indeed, after an initial unsuccessful approach between the DRC and Ethiopian Airlines in 2022, it was through the efforts of President Tshisekedi that the two parties were able to establish a fruitful collaboration. This partnership is seen as a catalyst to boost the Congolese economy while improving regional connectivity.
With a fleet expected to expand rapidly and management focused on operational efficiency, Air Congo is well-positioned to become a key player in the African aviation sector. The development of this company could also have a positive impact on other economic sectors by facilitating foreign investment and encouraging tourism. [4]

The launch of Air Congo represents a decisive turning point for aviation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. By partnering with Ethiopian Airlines, the DRC demonstrates its commitment to modernizing its aviation sector while aligning with a broader regional dynamic. The success of this project will depend not only on the commitment of the partners but also on the continued support of the Congolese government.
With Air Congo, the DRC opens a new chapter in its economic history and civil aviation. By improving air infrastructure and facilitating trade between provinces, this initiative could play a crucial role in the socio-economic development of the country. The prospects are promising for a future where Air Congo could become a symbol of national pride and a driver of sustainable growth for the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the international stage.
