Forum Économique RDC-Chine : Lancement de la Première Édition à Beijing

The first Economic Forum between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and China opened in Beijing, as part of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC 2024) summit. This historic event, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba, responsible for Transport, Communication Routes, and Opening Up, marks a decisive turning point in the economic relations between the two nations. More than 300 participants, including government representatives, entrepreneurs, and investors from both countries, gathered to discuss collaboration opportunities in various strategic sectors.

Opening of the Forum

On behalf of President Félix Tshisekedi, Jean-Pierre Bemba inaugurated the forum's proceedings by highlighting the importance of strengthening economic relations between the DRC and China. This initiative is part of the FOCAC 2024 summit, which brings together African and Chinese leaders to discuss ways to enhance their strategic partnership. The presence of over 300 Chinese and Congolese participants demonstrates the growing interest in mutually beneficial economic collaboration. The forum aims to create a dialogue space where both parties can exchange on investment opportunities and development projects, while exploring new avenues for increased cooperation.

Key Sectors Discussed

The DRC-China Economic Forum focused on several key sectors considered priorities for the development of both nations. Discussions covered mining, trade, agriculture, industry, infrastructure, sustainable energy, and digital technology. Each sector was examined in detail, with a particular emphasis on ways to mobilize Chinese investments to support the development of these areas in the DRC. Participants explored the possibilities of public-private partnerships, joint venture projects between Congolese and Chinese companies, as well as mechanisms to facilitate access to public and private financing. This forum highlighted the DRC's strengths as an investment destination while identifying areas where Chinese cooperation could have a significant impact.

Access to Financing

One of the major aspects of the DRC-China Economic Forum was the discussion on access to financing, essential for the development of projects in priority sectors. The forum emphasized the importance of mobilizing Chinese public financing to support Congolese initiatives in strategic sectors. Participants explored the different mechanisms available to access this financing, notably through Chinese banks, international financial institutions, and investment funds. The goal is to facilitate the implementation of concrete projects that will contribute to the economic development of the DRC, while strengthening trade ties between the two countries.

Encouragement of joint initiatives

The forum also served as a platform to encourage joint initiatives between Congolese and Chinese companies. The discussions highlighted the advantages of joint venture partnerships, allowing the expertise and resources of both parties to be combined to undertake large-scale projects. These collaborations are particularly important in sectors such as infrastructure, where China has recognized expertise. By working together, companies from both countries can not only achieve their economic goals but also contribute to the sustainable development of the DRC.

Business Environment in DRC

Another crucial point addressed during the forum was the presentation of the business environment in the DRC. Congolese representatives took this opportunity to reassure Chinese investors about the efforts made by the government to improve the business climate. Recent reforms, aimed at simplifying administrative procedures, ensuring legal security for investments, and combating corruption, were highlighted. These measures are intended to make the DRC more attractive to foreign investors by offering a stable and favorable framework for business development.

Forum Closing

The closing of the forum, scheduled for September 3, 2024, will be presided over by President Félix Tshisekedi. This event will mark the end of official discussions and pave the way for the implementation of agreements and partnerships concluded during these two days of work. President Tshisekedi's presence at the closing ceremony underscores the importance the DRC places on this economic partnership with China. This forum represents an important milestone in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and heralds new development opportunities for the DRC, thanks to cooperation with China.

This forum has laid the groundwork for a sustainable collaboration in strategic sectors for the development of the DRC. By facilitating access to financing and encouraging joint initiatives, the DRC and China are laying the foundations for a win-win partnership that will benefit both countries. The active participation of representatives from both nations and the commitment of President Félix Tshisekedi demonstrate the DRC's determination to leverage this cooperation for the development of its economy and the improvement of the well-being of its population.
