The relations between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Qatar started modestly with diplomatic exchanges, aiming to exploit economic and commercial opportunities. Over the years, these relations have been strengthened through bilateral agreements to promote trade, investment, and technical cooperation. A significant milestone in this cooperation was the inauguration of Qatar Airways flights to Kinshasa in 2024, symbolizing the growth of economic and cultural ties between the two nations.[1]

As part of a dynamic bilateral cooperation between Qatar and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Qatar Airways triumphantly inaugurated its first flight; its inaugural flight from Doha to Kinshasa, marking its first foray into the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This historic event took place on Saturday, June 1st at the international airport of [2].[2]

Arrival of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC

The state-of-the-art Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, one of the flagship planes of Qatar Airways, has landed for the first time on Congolese soil, marking the beginning of the bold new air link. With 22 business class seats and 232 economy class seats, this aircraft now provides a direct connection between Doha and Kinshasa. [3].

A New Air Connectivity between Qatar and DRC

This inauguration now allows Congolese people to access a vast global network comprising 170 destinations transporting up to 47,000 passengers. This new direct link between Doha and Kinshasa not only opens up new opportunities for business travelers and tourists to and from the DRC, but also facilitates commercial exchanges between the two countries, thereby strengthening economic and diplomatic relations.

The Vice President Sales-Africa of Qatar Airways, Hendrik Du Preez, as a seven-time winner of the "best airline in the world" award, is delighted to present their world-class travel experience in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo; Kinshasa becomes the 29th destination in Africa. [4]

With four weekly flights, this new route is intended to strengthen the economic and commercial potential of the DRC. By facilitating international trade through reducing logistical costs and opening up new markets for Congolese businesses, this air connection plays a crucial role. By boosting the tourism sector, it attracts more visitors, creating jobs and generating foreign currency revenue. Furthermore, this link enhances the confidence of foreign investors, promoting investments in infrastructure and services. Improvements in airport infrastructure and the development of related services stimulate the local economy, thereby contributing to the growth and economic prosperity of the DRC.

Today's inaugural flight marks a major turning point for Kinshasa and, by extension, for the DRC, thus offering an increased opportunity to fully leverage the growth potential that enhanced air connectivity brings. Bilateral Cooperation between the DRC and Qatar

The Democratic Republic of Congo and the Emirate of Qatar have signed agreements for economic, commercial, and technical cooperation, aiming to secure and protect the massive planned investments. These agreements encompass the modernization and development of airport and port infrastructures, as well as the enhancement of skills of Congolese experts in various sectors, including aviation and maritime.

In the maritime sector, the planned investments aim to modernize strategic infrastructures such as the ports of Matadi, Kinshasa, and Boma. Additionally, an agreement has been reached to train and enhance technical skills in supervising the safety and security of civil aviation. Qatar Airways is also involved in this extensive project by proposing a partnership with the Air Navigation Authority (RVA) to modernize and finance three major airports: N’djili and Ndolo in Kinshasa, as well as Luano in Lubumbashi, the latter being dedicated to business aviation.
